فکرة البقاء غير الآمن کانت موجودة بکثرة عبر فترات ومراحل تاريخية کثيرة ومع التقدم التاريخي ومع ارتفاع عدد السکان وسعي البشر لتلبية احتياجاتهم من الغذاء انتشر بشکل مرتبط بالحفاظ على البقاء الوجودي الجوع والمرض والقتال والعنف، وفي مثل تلک الظروف غير الآمنة ازداد التضامن القوي للأفراد وزاد امتثالهم للقواعد والمعايير العامة والتفافهم حول سلطة قائد قوي وإطاعته ورفض الغرباء، حيث تمثل هذه البيئة مناخاً ملائماً لزيادة التضامن خاصة إذا کان لدى أفراد القبيلة أو المجموعة ما يکفي من الأراضي التي تدعم نفوذ الجماعة وتدعمها. وهذا يعضِّد فکرة أن الحفاظ على البقاء يمثل اختياراً أساسياً وجوهرياً کأحد متطلبات الأمن الوجودي للأفراد ويفتح الطريق لمزيد من استقلالية الأفراد ومزيد من الانفتاح على الغير وتقبُّل الأفکار الجديدة.
